Get Involved
Interested in joining the FROST Lab? We welcome both undergraduate and graduate students eager to contribute to cutting-edge research in field robotics, perception, and autonomous systems.
For BYU Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate research is a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience in robotics and engineering. If you are a BYU student, there are several structured avenues to join the FROST Lab.
IMMERSE (ECE)
Apply through the Electrical and Computer Engineering IMMERSE program for immersive summer research with mentorship from faculty and graduate students.
ECE 497R / ME 497R
Enrolling in a 497R allows you to earn credit while contributing to FROST Lab projects.
Paid Research Positions
Paid opportunities to work on FROST Lab projects. Positions vary by term and project availability.
Not sure where to start? Reach out to a graduate student working on a project that interests you, or contact one of the FROST Lab professors to discuss fit and available openings.
What We Look For
- • Curiosity: Genuine interest in robotics, research, engineering, or the scientific method.
- • Reliability: Commitment to attending meetings and following through on tasks.
- • Problem-Solving: Willingness to learn and tackle challenges creatively.
- • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate with peers, graduate students, and faculty.
- • Prior Experience: Not required—we mentor students at all levels. Coursework in robotics, programming, or controls is helpful but not necessary.
For Graduate Students
The FROST Lab is an excellent environment for graduate research. We support both MS thesis projects and PhD dissertations across robotics, perception, autonomy, and systems engineering.
Joining the Lab as a Graduate Student
Contact Faculty Directly
Email professors whose research aligns with your interests. Share your CV, research statement, and specific projects or topics that excite you.
Discuss Research Fit
Have a conversation about potential thesis/dissertation topics, available funding, timeline, and lab culture. Ensure your goals and interests align with faculty expectations and ongoing research directions.
Apply to BYU Graduate Programs
Once you've identified an advisor and discussed research, apply to the relevant BYU graduate program at gradstudies.byu.edu. Application deadlines are January 15 for Fall admission and August 15 for Winter admission.
For Non-BYU Undergraduate Students
Interested in spending a summer with the FROST Lab? The best pathway for non-BYU students is the Robotics Pioneers REU Summer Program hosted at BYU.
Robotics Pioneers REU
A paid, 10-week immersive research experience for undergraduate students outside of BYU.
Apply at robotics.byu.edu/reuIf you have questions about fit or projects, reach out to a lab faculty member—let us know your interests and prior experience so we can advise on the application.
